How to visit the Observatory of Campo Imperatore
Each year the Observatory of Campo Imperatore is reached by thousands of visitors. To participate to our initiatives for public it is required no previous specific preparation and each one, from children to graduate students, could satisfy his curiosity.
The guided visits to the observatory are open to singles and groups up to a maximum of 25 persons per round. To know availability or to make a reservation contact Centro Turistico Gran Sasso using e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone at the numbers +39-0862-606847 and +39-0862-400007 or visit one of the information points located at Fonte Cerreto or at Campo Imperatore.
The program offers three different visit types in accordance with the scientific activities underway:
- DAYTIME VISIT
the visit takes about 45min and includes the entrance inside the Observatory, a film projection about the building and its activities, the visit to one of the telescopes;
- DAYTIME VISIT WITH CONFERENCE
the visit takes about 1hr and half and includes the entrance inside the Observatory, a conference with an astronomer (Italian or English language), the visit to one of the telescopes and (if the weather is favourable) the observation of the Sun with a dedicated telescope from the garden (Apo TEC140ED);
- EVENING VISIT
the visit takes about 2hrs and half and includes the entrance inside the Observatory, a conference with an astronomer (Italian or English language), the visit to one of the telescopes and (if the weather is favourable) the observation of the night sky with dedicated telescopes from the garden (Apo TEC140ED + S/C 11" EDGE-HD).
Visitor should know that, due to meteo conditions, the Observatory could not guarantee the observations included in the visit program. Depending on the personnel making the visit, the activity with the external telescopes could be cancelled to guarantee visitors and instrumentation safety.
The access to the Observatory and the movements inside could be difficult or even impossible to handicapped due to stairs.
The best period to visit the Observatory is around summer (from May to October). In any case a proper dressing is required: keep in mind that low temperatures and strong wind could occur even in summer in Campo Imperatore.
